Hundreds of Buffalo high school freshmen attended an event Thursday meant to get them interested in a career in the emerging field of nanotechnology.

Buffalo NanoCareer Day was expected to draw 450 ninth-graders from public and charter schools in the city to Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

The event was sponsored by SUNY’s NanoCollege in Albany, an institution that is building close connections to the local biotech industry and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

The state and private industry are investing hundreds of millions of dollars and creating hundreds of jobs in related fields here.

NanoCareer Day attendees watched demonstrations, listened to presentations and took part in hands-on activities meant to get them thinking about pursuing studies in nanotechnology, which involves engineering or manufacturing conducted at a subatomic scale.
