U. S. News & World Report has released its annual rankings of health insurance plans, including the three major insurers in Western New York.

For the fifth year, the magazine worked with the National Committee for Quality Assurance, managed care’s major accrediting and standards-setting organization, to rate the carriers in three lines of business: commercial, Medicare and Medicaid health plans.

The committee analyzed dozens of quality measures from 730 plans for member satisfaction, prevention and treatment to arrive at its rankings.

Here is how the local insurers ranked:

Independent Health — commercial, 31st; Medicaid, 12th; Medicare, 18th.

HealthNow, the parent company of BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York — commercial, 54th; Medicaid, 22nd; Medicare, 35th.

Univera — commercial, 58th; Medicaid, unreported; Medicare, 27th.

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, based in Wellesley, Mass., ranked first for commercial plans.

“Determining these rankings with clinical quality, member satisfaction and NCQA accreditation standards provides an independent third-party ranking of health plans across the country, which benefits consumers when they make choices about their health care plan,” Dr. Michael W. Cropp, president and chief executive officer of Independent Health, said in a statement.
