Tops Friendly Markets is renovating a former IGA supermarket in Spencerport into a new Tops store, marking the first new store to open since the Amherst-based chain was bought from Dutch food giant Royal Ahold.

The new store, announced Wednesday, is expected to open next summer and employ 100 people. It is part of Tops’ previously announced $150 million capital improvements plan.

That plan includes an emphasis on partnerships with other local vendors, such as area farmers, the Tim Hortons coffee and bakery chain and the marketing of Anchor Bar chicken wings.

It will also include Tops’ first gasoline fueling station in the Rochester area.

Tops was sold to Morgan Stanley Private Equity in 2007, leading to the return of its management operations to Amherst and the creation of 140 new jobs.

The company operates 76 supermarkets and employs 10,000 people in New York and Pennsylvania.
