BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Sen. Charles Schumer is concerned about increasing wait times on the Peace Bridge heading into Buffalo.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection statistics released Thursday by Schumer show passenger vehicles on the Canadian side of the Peace Bridge have, on average, waited almost twice as long to cross into the United States this year compared with 2012.
The Buffalo News reports (http://bit.ly/1bVbqHz ) that it took an average of 5.9 minutes for passengers to cross the border in the government's 2013 fiscal year, compared to 3.1 minutes the year before.
Schumer says the backups are a drag on the economy. He said more agents are needed to usher travelers, sports fans, shoppers and commercial vehicles into western New York.
Customs officials agreed staffing appeared to be at the root of the problem.
