NEW YORK (AP) New York City police have arrested a homeless man in connection with the rape of a woman in Central Park.

Police say 32-year-old Omar Hoist was arrested Tuesday inside the Metropolitan Hospital. They charged him with rape, strangulation and assault.

It wasn't immediately known if he had a lawyer.

Police say the suspect approached the victim on East 88th Street and Fifth Avenue at 3:30 a.m. Sunday. They began talking and then walked into the park. Police say they sat on a bench near 100th Street where the suspect suddenly dragged the woman into a grassy area and raped her.

She managed to get away. Police say the suspect told the woman his name was Omar.

Surveillance video captured him walking with the victim before the attack.
