NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Former CIA director David Petraeus has helped a Hudson Valley community organization kick off its campaign to establish a literary center at a former state armory.
The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports (http://bit.ly/17BgWC6 ) that the retired four-star general and West Point graduate toured the Newburgh Armory Unity Center on Thursday. Petraeus is a native of nearby Cornwall, on the Hudson River 50 miles north of New York City.
Several hundred people turned out for his visit, during which Petraeus praised the facility's education and athletic programs for boys and girls.
Petraeus commanded troops in Iraq and Afghanistan before being named CIA director. He resigned from the post a year ago this month after an affair with his biographer was revealed by an FBI investigation.
