CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — A driver accused of mowing down a Long Island woman has pleaded not guilty to leaving the scene of a fatal incident.
Peter Torillo of Eastport appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip (EYE'-slihp.) Bail was set at $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond.
The victim, 27-year-old Erika Strebel, also of Eastport, was struck Nov. 2 while standing next to her Jeep, which had run out of gas.
It's alleged that the 48-year-old Torillo took his truck to a Queens body shop for repairs afterward.
Defense attorney Brian Desesa (deh-SEH'-suh) said Torillo went to a mental health facility before turning himself in.
Desesa expressed sympathy for the victim's family. He called it "a horrible day for everybody."
Torillo also is charged with leaving the scene of a serious injury incident.
