ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Police officials say a 20-year-old man shot by an officer during a foot chase in a Rochester neighborhood was armed with a sawed-off shotgun.
Police Chief James Sheppard tells local media that when two officers were frisking two men Sunday night, one of the officers felt a weapon in the waistband of Tyshawn Johnson's pants.
Sheppard says Johnson broke free and ran off with both officers in pursuit. Police say Johnson displayed the gun and turned toward the officers as he ran. That's when Officer Cody Goodfriend fired once, hitting Johnson in the lower back.
Johnson is in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Police say the officers had been called to a neighborhood by a store owner reporting two men acting suspiciously.
