ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says his office has reached an agreement with the Rochester Police Department to provide interpreters and translators needed by residents who speak limited English.

Schneiderman says the agreement announced this week shows the effort needed to ensure police services aren't limited by language barriers.

Under the agreement, the department says it will improve officer access to interpretation and translation services for victims, witnesses, and subjects of investigations. It will also train both current and new officers on revised language-access protocols.

Rochester Chief James Sheppard says they're pleased to strengthen practices through the cooperative project.
