PITTSBURGH (AP) They'll be celebrating the birth of the banana split in one western Pennsylvania town this weekend with the help of the Dole fruit company and a nearby college.

Latrobe officials are dedicating a historical marker near the spot where the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission says the first such dessert was made by an apprentice pharmacist in 1904. Latrobe's about 40 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Dole got wind of the event thanks to St. Vincent College whose students have been banana split fans since the very beginning and is joining forces to sponsor the "Great American Banana Split Celebration."

It starts Friday with the historical marker dedication and winds up Sunday with a free banana split bar open to the public on the nearby college campus.
