FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon says the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a suburban St. Louis police officer feels "like an old wound torn fresh" in a nation still struggling with race relations.

Nixon spoke Tuesday night at a community forum near Ferguson, where an as-yet unidentified officer shot 18-year-old Michael Brown over the weekend. A friend who was with Brown has said the officer fired several shots after Brown had kneeled on the ground with his arms raised.

Local and state elected leaders and dozens of clergy members from the St. Louis area attended the forum. It was organized to offer alternative community responses after two nights of unrest in which crowds burned stores, vandalized vehicles, assaulted reporters and taunted armor-wearing officers.
