Alzheimer’s Association hosts open house

The Alzheimer’s Association, Western New York Chapter, will host an open house Thursday at its chapter office in Williamsville.

The event runs from 4 to 6 p.m. at 2805 Wehrle Drive, Suite 6. It’s designed to “provide a venue for caregivers, family members, those living with the disease, professionals, and the general public to collect information and enroll in various programs and services related to wandering prevention and general safety preparedness,” said Andrew Wilton, the chapter’s director of outreach initiatives.

On-site enrollment will be offered for MedicAlert, the Alzheimer’s Association Safe Return program, and the Safety ID Program, organized by the Free and Accepted Masons of New York.

Annual Day of Health happens Friday

Catholic Health will host its second annual WomenCare Day of Health – Be Strong, Be Happy, Be Healthy from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Millennium Hotel on Walden Avenue in Cheektowaga.

Presentations including topics of nutrition, pelvic health and body image. Breakfast, lunch, chair massages, female-focused exhibits, shopping opportunities and raffles also are part of the event.

All area women are invited to attend. Doors open at 7:45 a.m. and seating is limited. Ticket donation is $30 ($250 for a table of 10), with all proceeds benefiting the Neonatal Intensive Care units at Sisters of Charity and Mercy hospitals. Yoga provides many benefits

Implementing yoga into a workout routine can provide unique health benefits, said a Baylor College of Medicine physician and yoga enthusiast.

“Yoga is a broad philosophy containing many different paths to achieve the goal of physical, mental and spiritual well-being,” said Dr. Bobby Kapur, assistant professor of medicine at BCM and associate chief for emergency medicine at the Harris County Hospital District’s Ben Taub General Hospital.

Yoga entails various positions, stretching and deep breathing. Practicing yoga can help a person improve flexibility, balance, limberness, blood circulation, and it can also relax muscle tension and fight infection, Kapur said.
