Across the street and three houses down. That’s how close Heather Bujnicki and Chris Wasik lived to each other growing up. They played with the other kids in their Cheektowaga neighborhood. Their families were friendly, gathering together for game nights, backyard campfires and Christmas-in-July parties. In middle school, Heather Bujnicki developed a slight crush on her future groom. And Chris Wasik began to realize this smart girl he had known since age 6 wasn’t so nerdy after all. Light flirting ensued.

In the 10th grade, he asked her out. To his surprise, she turned him down.

“I thought, ‘This is weird.’ It was totally unexpected. I guess I just knew a thing or two about better timing. It wasn’t the right time,” she explained earlier this week.

Although they continued to run into each other, it wasn’t until 2010 that he asked her out again “as friends” to a wedding in Cleveland. This time she said yes. A long-distance romance ensued. He was living in Buffalo; she was in medical school in Pittsburgh. On April 27, 2012, he proposed to her in the middle of the street between their two childhood homes.

“My mom and dad were looking out the window. Heather’s mom was hiding in a bush trying to take pictures,” Wasik said.

The couple, both 28, was married at 2 p.m. June 1 in Corpus Christi Church on Clark Street. The Rev. Mariusz Dymek heard the couple’s vows. Following the ceremony, guests gathered at a reception in Pearl Street Grill & Brewery.

Heather Wasik is the daughter of Paul C. and Nancy Bujnicki of Cheektowaga. A graduate of West Seneca East Senior High School, she earned a bachelor of science degree in exercise science from the University at Buffalo and a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is a pediatric resident at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore.

Chris Wasik is the son of Joseph S. and Kathleen M. Wasik of Cheektowaga. The groom, a financial analyst at Parexel in Baltimore, is a graduate of St. Francis High School. He earned a bachelor of science degree in finance from John Carroll University in Cleveland.

The couple, who traveled to Riviera Maya, Mexico, has returned home to Baltimore.
