This weekend, with the Taste of Buffalo going full swing, how about a Taste of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra?
It’s happening next door at Canalside. It’s free and less fattening.
The BPO’s weekend on the waterfront has a lot in common with a food festival. You may sample different varieties of music the way you might sample various chicken wing sauces.
Day One of “BPO At Canalside” culminates in a pops concert today at 7 p.m. Matthew Kraemer, the orchestra’s associate conductor, will preside over “Broadway Bound,” featuring guest vocalists Elizabeth Southard and Gary Mauer. They’ll sing songs from shows including “West Side Story,” “My Fair Lady,” “The Music Man,” “The Sound of Music,” “Phantom,” “Les Mis” and “Porgy and Bess.”
Sunday’s day of music builds up to “Superheroes at the Symphony,” a 3 p.m. performance conducted by Kraemer geared toward “kids of all ages.”
Whichever option you choose, here’s the menu:
1-3 p.m.: Kids are invited to make an instrument with Albright-Knox Art Gallery, get their faces painted and participate in other family activities.
2 p.m.: Serenade by the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus.
2:45 p.m.: Explore the artistry of the Buffalo Chamber Players, a freewheeling confederation of musicians including many BPO players, who perform classics of the chamber music repertoire and also pieces off the beaten path.
3:45 p.m.: Get with the beat of the BPO percussion section, joined by Joe Desotelle, winner of the Friends of the BPO Scholarship.
4:15 p.m.: The African-American Cultural Center’s Dance and Drum Performance Company offers a taste of world beat.
5:15 p.m.: Groove to the sounds of a jazz quintet led by Sal Andolina, BPO saxophonist, bass clarinetist and personal friend of Benny Goodman.
7 p.m.: Matthew Kraemer conducts “Broadway Bound.”
1-3 p.m.: Kids get another chance to make an instrument with Albright-Knox Art Gallery; face-painting and other family activities.
1:45 Meet a musician! Principal timpanist Matthew Bassett, English horn player Anna Mattix and trombonist Tim Smith will be on hand to mingle and answer questions about their instruments and their lives.
3 p.m.: “Superheroes” concert featuring music from Spiderman, Batman and Superman movies, conducted by Kraemer.
