A Cattaraugus County woman was attacked by her own dog Thursday afternoon, leaving her with numerous bites to her face, body and legs, state police said.

Jacki Hopkins, 66, of Portville was found injured and lying on the ground behind her Windfall Road house by a neighbor who heard her calls for help.

She was treated at the scene by Weston Mills Fire Department and transported to Olean General Hospital, then flown by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center. She was listed in serious condition Friday.

The dog, a 125-pound doberman, had escaped from a fenced yard, state police investigators said. They believe Hopkins was trying to return the dog to the yard when it attacked her. Troopers destroyed the dog, police said.

The Cattaraugus County Health Department has been alerted about the incident.
