The Clarence Industrial Development Agency has hired a part-time economic development officer, to work with existing businesses and help recruit new ones.

The agency chose James Rasch, who retired about three years ago from Avox Systems – formerly known as Scott Aviation – in Lancaster. He was in charge of business development for the last 16 of the 24 years he spent with the company, forming strategic partnerships and business-to-business relationships, among other responsibilities.

“When I heard about the possibility of a position working for the town I’ve lived in for 48 years, and got a look at what the job description looked like, it looked like a perfect match for a part-time situation that I was seeking anyway,” Rasch told the IDA board last week.

Rasch will be paid $20,000 a year plus health benefits. He will work as a contractor for the Clarence IDA and report to its chairman. He was appointed on a one-year basis, renewable annually.

The IDA was looking to fill the job with someone who was “going to stick around,” instead of taking the job for a while until another opportunity came along, said David C. Hartzell Jr., the Clarence IDA’s chairman.
