Shawn Colvin offers a quote from the late poet Anne Sexton as a preface to her recently published memoir, “Diamond in the Rough.”
“Put your ear down close to your soul and listen hard,” are Sexton’s words, but they apply to Colvin’s 20-plus years as a singer/songwriter and record maker. An eye and an ear for the intimate detail, a tendency toward both understatement and honest expression, and the ability to unearth the universal resonance in the personal and particular – these traits have marked Colvin’s work from her 1989 debut through this year’s Buddy Miller-produced roots music tour de force, “All Fall Down.”
Colvin will perform an intimate solo acoustic show at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Buffalo State College Performing Arts Center in Rockwell Hall. Tickets are $30 to $35 with discounts for seniors, students and Buffalo State College faculty (box office or call 878-3005). Visit www.buffalostatepac.org.
