Giancarlo Iuorio scored twice and Ryan Murphy’s third-period goal broke a tie at 3 as Niagara University earned a milestone triumph in defeating Sacred Heart, 5-3, in an Atlantic Hockey Association game at Dwyer Arena in Lewiston on Friday.

The victory is the 200th in coach Dave Burkholder’s career at Niagara. He is 200-167-47 since becoming the program’s coach in 2001.

Murphy’s goal at 6:34 of the third gave Niagara (9-2-3, 8-0-0) the lead for good in a game that was tied three times as winless Sacred Heart (0-11-2,0-8-2), with a dangerous transition game, tried to delay Burkholder’s 200th win. It didn’t happen as Niagara pulled away during the final 20 minutes.

“I don’t think it [the 200th win] is part of the story line,” Burkholder said. “I think it’s about the team and the streak we’re on. The [200th win] says I’ve had some unbelievable assistant coaches and players come through the program. I’m really blessed.”

Also, junior goalie Tony Capobianco recorded 36 saves to earn his first shutout of the season in Canisius College’s 3-0 victory at Connecticut.

Elsewhere, Buffalo State’s Roderick Epps poured in 27 points to lead the Bengals men’s basketball team to an 85-64 triumph over Oneonta in the SUNYAC opener for both schools.
