A Depew man was charged late Tuesday with assaulting a manager at a downtown hotel who tried to prevent him from stealing a flat-screen television, Buffalo police said.

Frank T. Porter, 40, and Heather D. Mongold, 23, both of the same Benz Drive address in Depew, tried to steal the flat-screen TV about 11:30 p.m. from a hotel room at the Holiday Inn on Delaware Avenue, police reported.

Ryan Nye, an assistant manager at the hotel, spotted the attempted theft and intervened, and Porter slugged him in the head and face several times, according to a police report.

Porter and Mongold also are accused of fighting with Detective Edward Cotter and Officer Stephen Schulz, who responded to a 911 call and placed the pair under arrest.

Porter and Mongold each were charged with burglary, resisting arrest and petit larceny, police said. Porter also was charged with third-degree assault and harassment.
