Police tonight released the name of the 72-year-old Lancaster man who was struck and killed by a vehicle late Wednesday while crossing five lanes of Broadway in the town.

Richard Stevens was hit just after 11 p.m., while walking north across Broadway, near Bowen Road, by a vehicle that was traveling west on Broadway and driven by Jeffrey Szafraniec, 24, of Buffalo, Lancaster police said.

Police Chief Gerald J. Gill Jr. said Stevens was not crossing the street at a traffic light or pedestrian walkway.

Stevens, who was unconscious and unresponsive after the crash, was taken to Sisters Hospital - St. Joseph Campus in Cheektowaga, where he was pronounced dead.

No charges have been filed against Szafraniec, who has cooperated with the continuing investigation, police said.

Gill said there is no indication that alcohol, drugs or excessive speed were factors in the crash.

The Lancaster Police Accident Investigation Unit will await results of an autopsy and toxicology tests before completing its investigation.
