Ulrich's Tavern has officially reopened.
A month after being abruptly shut down by the state for back taxes, the iconic Buffalo tavern and restaurant held a bar-only reopening party Tuesday sponsored by Flying Bison Brewery.
Ulrich's filed for bankruptcy Aug. 23, with a list of creditors including the state Department of Taxation & Finance, which was owed $205,000, and the Internal Revenue Service, $65,000.
A 2011 tax return included in the filing showed Ulrich's operated at a loss of $20,432 that year. A profit-and-loss sheet showed the business operating $7,537 in the red this year through May 20.
Owner Jim Daley has since sought business and financial advice and has vowed to run a "much financially tighter ship." The kitchen began serving lunches Wednesday, and dinners will resume today.
Ulrich's is considered the oldest continuously running bar in Buffalo, first established in 1868. Daley's parents ran the business starting in the 1950s, before Daley bought it at and took over in 2000.
