"The Girl Behind the Glass" by Jane Kelley; Random House, $16.99.
When the Zimmer family moves into a creepy old house on Hemlock Road while their new house is being built, 11-year-old twins Anna and Hannah are horrified. There are bats, there are mice, there are strange noises and breezes and a stray cat mysteriously falls into muck even though the ground seems completely dry.
Then the twins start disagreeing with each other for the first time in their lives as Anna finds new friends and Hannah spends more and more time alone in the house, sensing that something or someone is trying to tell her something. Meanwhile, older sister Selena is happy because she's found a boyfriend -- unless the creepy house succeeds in driving him away.
This spooky ghost story builds the suspense right up to the very satisfying finale.
