The St. Dominic Savio Middle School Campus of the Catholic Academy of Niagara Falls, serving grades 6 to 8, will close at the end of the 2011-12 school year, according to the Diocese of Buffalo.

Students in grades 7 and 8 will move from the school at 504 66th St. to a wing of Niagara Catholic High School, next door at 520 66th St.; those in sixth grade will move to the Catholic Academy's Elementary School Campus at 1055 Military Road.

Judi Nolan Powell, vice chairwoman of the board of the Catholic Academy of Niagara Falls and chairwoman of the board of trustees of Niagara Catholic High School, said details of the move will be finalized in the next few months and parents will be invited to visit the new facilities.

No decision has been made on the future use of the St. Dominic Savio Middle School Campus.

The realignment is seen as an effort to right-size the use of facilities in the face of declining enrollments and increasing costs. The Catholic Academy currently serves about 265 students from prekindergarten through eighth grade at its campuses on 66th Street and on Military Road.

The realignment of Catholic school facilities is a result of a diocesan study called "Faith in Tomorrow," which concluded that changing conditions "suggest right-sizing and reallocation of capital and rethinking of management approaches. All current inefficiencies must be challenged and fixed."
