When the American falls went dry

Buy News photos |

A photo taken July 1, 1969, shows the dewatered American Falls. The riverbed was crisscrossed with a series of cracks that were being examined for possible links to rockslides. Work crews, drill rigs and cranes appear in miniature in this aerial photo. The flow of water was stopped June 12, 1969, to allow engineers to inspect the rocks for signs of weakness.
