Parades past and present

Buy News photos |

Organizers of the parades after they were revived in 1915 included, from left, Henry J. Finn, Michael Baker, Bob Slattery, John J. Carmody and Michael Cullinan. Descendants of both Finn and Carmody grew up hearing that their ancestor had invented or led the first parade in the city of Buffalo, which was actually held in 1848. This photo was taken at the home of Kathleen Lesniak, granddaughter of Carmody. On the back of the photo is written the words, “The officers of the first St. Patrick’s Day parade, 1916, J.J. Carmody grand marshal.”
