Remembering Pearl Harbor

Buy News photos |

A series of photos from Buffalo News archives chronicle the story of Dec. 7, 1941. The majority were provided by the government or military on the one-year anniversary of the bombings. The captions that follow are those provided with the pictures more than 70 years ago. For the picture above: “Pictured is a general view of Pearl Harbor on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, following the Japanese attack by hundreds of planes and ships. Destruction is seen everywhere, and the fear of invasion was high that fateful morning. ... Smoke is seen pouring from the USS Shaw (right center) while in the foreground lies the capsized minelayer Oglala. To the left is the cruiser Helena, while at the extreme left may be seen the superstructure of the USS Pennsylvania and at the right the USS Maryland burning.”
