A veteran of Haiti’s disbanded army sings as a buckling is sacrificed in a voodoo ceremony, in Mariani, Haiti, Saturday. The soldiers believe that slashing the throat of a young goat and drinking its blood is a sacrifice that will help to restore the armed forces. After the ceremony the veterans marched through the Mariani streets, commemorating the 210th anniversary of the country’s national flag. The ragtag group of ex-soldiers continue to press for the restoration of Haiti’s disbanded military. The National Armed Forces of Haiti was abolished in 1995 because of its history of toppling governments and crushing dissent. (AP Photo)
