Dr. Gilberto Mosqueda, associate professor of structural engineering at University of California at San Diego describes a "performance-based seismic assessment of unreinforced masonry buildings" in which researchers constructed two 14-foot brick walls to simulate how 100-year-old brick row houses in New York City would respond to an earthquake, at the MCEER (formerly the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research) at UB on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013. The structures fared quite well when faced with the equivalent of the 2011 Reston, Va., earthquake which had a magnitude of 5.8.
