An employee suffered third-degree burns in an explosion this morning at Gernatt Asphalt in the Cattaraugus County Town of Yorkshire, according to State Police.

It happened at about 6 a.m. at the plant, which is located on Route 16 in Yorkshire.

Police said Thomas L. Treadway, 53, was in the process of shutting down the asphalt plant when an explosion occurred in the conveyor belt, causing significant damage to the plant.

Treadway suffered serious burns to his upper body and was transported by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center where he was listed in serious condition.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
