A Catholic nun and an expert in Mayan spirituality will hang their artwork side by side in a new exhibition in Casa de Arte (141 Elmwood Ave.) designed to explore the common threads between artistic and spiritual pursuits.
Sister Mary Ann Therese Kelly, an accomplished stained glass artist whose work is in private homes and houses of worship throughout Western New York, will present samples of her art, which is often based on St. Francis of Assisi’s poem “The Canticle of the Sun.” Joining her in the show is Antum Kojtom, an artist of Mayan descent from the Mexican region of Chiapas, who will exhibit new oil paintings rife with Mayan symbolism.
Though the artists come from different faith backgrounds, their religious forebears share a fascination with the natural world, one that finds a voice as much in St. Francis’s beloved poem about the sacred creatures of nature as in the Mayans’ deep respect for the natural environment.
“They have more in common than one might think,” Casa de Arte co-owner Richard Williams wrote in an email.
