A soldier from the Buffalo area stationed at Fort Hood died Sunday after being found unresponsive in her barracks at the Texas military base, the Fort Hood Public Affairs Office announced today.
Pfc. Lisa Christine Salzman was assigned to Fort Hood as a member of an artillery brigade in January of this year. The 27-year-old recently completed her first full year of service, having joined the military as a small-arms artillery repairer in May 2012.
Salzman earned a number of awards and decorations in her time as a soldier, including the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon, Fort Hood officials said in a statement.
Salzman is the second Western New York soldier stationed at Fort Hood to die this summer. On July 14, Pfc. Christopher Kent Heinz, 25, an Army combat engineer from Lockport, drowned while swimming with friends in a lake 20 minutes east of the fort.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Salzman’s death.
