Canada’s 2012 Horse of the Year, Uncaptured, starting from the No. 1 post, is the odds-on favorite to win the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes tonight at Fort Erie Race Track. Post time is 5:50 p.m. at the border track. The Prince of Wales, second jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, is the eighth race on the card.
Traditionally the Prince of Wales has been run on a Sunday, but Fort Erie decided to break with tradition to attract a larger crowd, more offtrack betting and deal with less competition for attention on the sports calendar.
Queens Plate winner Midnight Aria is not entered leaving the favorite’s role to Uncaptured, last year’s Canadian 2-year-old champion. Uncaptured did not run in the Plate on the synthetic surface at Woodbine last month and has not raced since finishing second in the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs on dirt. Uncovered is one of four Mark Casse-trained thoroughbreds in the Prince of Wales Field. The other three are No. 2 post Dynamic Sky (3-1), No. 3 Spring in the Air (4-1) and No. 6 Jagger M (6-1).
Others in the field are: No. 4 Rackman (30-1), No. 5 River Seven (12-1), No. 7 Niigons Glory (15-1) and No. 8 Power Phil (12-1).#
