A 21-year-old Buffalo man remained hospitalized in serious condition Monday morning after he and an accomplice were shot by one of the men they held up Sunday evening in the University District, police said..

Bernard Byrd III, who apparently was shot in the chest, remained in Erie County Medical Center, where he was taken after the robbery on Minnesota Avenue, just west of Eggert Road. He and Robert Moore, 19, also of Buffalo, were charged with first-degree robbery.

“Initial indications are that two suspects attempted to rob a male victim, when the victim shot the two suspects,” police spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge said.

Detectives have said the two suspects took a gold necklace and an undisclosed amount of cash from a 50-year-old man.

The intended victim of the robbery had a permit for his gun, police said.

Following the double shooting, police arrested both fleeing suspects and, with the help of K-9 Herc, recovered the stolen necklace and cash.
