MIDDLE ISLAND, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a resident of a suburban New York group home has died following a confrontation with police.
Suffolk County police also say "multiple officers" were treated for various injuries during the struggle Wednesday night at a group home in Middle Island.
Police were called to the Maryhaven Center of Hope at about 8:15 p.m. Maryhaven employees had told police that resident Dainell Simmons had become uncontrollable and violent.
Police officers used a Taser and pepper spray during the confrontation and at some point became "unresponsive."
He later died at a hospital. An autopsy is planned.
Maryhaven runs group homes in several locations. It expressed condolences in a statement, but did not comment further.
A spokeswoman for a state agency that regulates group homes did not immediately comment.
