The summer is flying, all the faster because the Sunday jazz concerts on the steps of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery have been so good. This year, The Buffalo News Jazz at the Albright-Knox festival is on a tear. All three artists featured so far – Cindy Miller, Mike Costley and pianist Douglas “Trigger” Gaston, who performed last Sunday, have been terrific.

This Sunday, the fun is sure to continue, because Don Rice, the featured attraction, has a great track record with the festival. Rice is a marvelous tenor saxophonist with a special gift for ballads. His soulful but breathy and understated tone harks back to Lester Young, Stan Getz and Zoot Sims. He will be performing Sunday with pianist Bobby Jones, bassist Wayne Moose and drummer Dan Hull, a wonderful trio.

It all begins at 2 p.m. Sunday on the back steps of the Albright-Knox. Get there early for the choicest seats on the grass. The concert is free.
