The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is winding up its summer season with a pair of very different concerts tonight and Friday.
Artpark is in the midst of its 40th season, and on this date in 1974, the venue celebrated its first concert. The Buffalo Philharmonic, led by Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas, was the featured attraction. At 8 tonight, history will repeat itself with an evening of classical music, dance and musical theater that closely follows the original program. The Neglia Ballet Artists and Festival Ballet of Providence are performing the same passionate duets, by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev, that were danced years ago. Michele Ragusa, homegrown Broadway star, is going to sing excerpts from classic Broadway shows. The evening ends with Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” fireworks and a champagne toast.
Admission is $25-$45. Call Artpark at 754-4375.
After that fire and excitement, it will feel good to come into the cool of Kleinhans Music Hall, where at 7 p.m. Friday JoAnn Falletta and the BPO will be presenting an evening of Spanish-themed music. The special guest will be Celil Refik Kaya, the winner of the most recent JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition, held in 2012.
Admission is $19-$49. Call 885-5000.
