KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a lost wallet containing nearly $500 has been returned to its owner after being found by a homeless man living on the streets of a Hudson Valley city.
Detective Lt. Thierry Croizer (tee-AYR'-ee kwah-ZEER') of the Kingston Police Department says Hassel Junior Barber found the wallet lying on a sidewalk Sunday and turned it in to police. The wallet contained $485 and the owner's identification.
Croizer says he wanted to publicize the story because it made him think twice about judging people based on appearances or circumstances. He also wanted local people to know about the man's honesty.
Croizer says the 50-year-old Barber lives on Kingston's streets by choice and told police he turned in the cash-filled wallet because it was "the right thing to do."
