WHEATLAND, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 50-year-old man has drowned after his kayak flipped over on a western New York creek during an outing with friends.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office tells local news outlets that Andrew Wright of Parma was kayaking on Oatka Creek with six friends when his craft overturned around 8 p.m. Monday in the town of Wheatland, 15 miles southwest of Rochester.
Deputies say Wright flipped over in a narrow passage with a 3-foot drop and became caught in a whirlpool. Police say he was under water for several minutes before his friends managed to free him.
Deputies say Wright was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where he was pronounced dead.
