KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — An official says a building under renovation has collapsed in the Ugandan capital, killing at least four people.
Patrick Onyango, a spokesman for Ugandan police, said the building in downtown Kampala collapsed on Monday morning, trapping an unknown number of people.
He said it was not clear how many people were at the site when the building collapsed. The four people so far confirmed killed were construction workers there.
In recent years building collapses have become frequent in East African countries as some property developers bypass regulations to cut costs. In March at least 30 people were killed when a building under construction collapsed in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's commercial capital.
