CROWNING TOUCH – A contest to determine Mr. and Mrs. Broadway Market in three age categories will be held as part of Market Community Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 999 Broadway. When the pageant begins at 11 a.m., contestants will be judged according to their answers to questions and how well their costumes represent the market. Winners will receive market-themed prizes.

FAMILY TIES – There will be dozens of ways to explore the lives and times of Italian immigrant families as the Lake Erie Italian Club, 3200 South Park Ave., Lackawanna, holds a Lackawanna Italian Heritage Celebration from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

There will be slide shows on Italian immigration to the U.S. and Lackawanna, and stories from people raised in the city’s Italian neighborhoods in Bethlehem Park and along Ingham Avenue and Roland Avenue between 1900 and 1950. Displays will list every Italian family in the city in 1930 and 1940, with large maps showing each house.

There also will be Italian dancers, Italian games for children and adults, and displays honoring the city’s sports heroes, outstanding citizens and military veterans. Making special appearances for storytelling will be Mayor Geoffrey Szymanski and restaurateur Dennis DiPaolo.

WHAT’S COOKING? – Holland United Methodist Church, Partridge Road and Route 16, is holding its third annual pig roast beginning at noon Saturday. Dinners are $9 and include a pulled pork sandwich, potato salad, coleslaw, homemade dessert and beverage.

The Rushford Conservation Club, 8725 County Road 49, hosts a steak barbecue beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday.

St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 12 Embry Place at Walden Avenue, Lancaster, is presenting a BW’s chicken and rib barbecue from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Dinners are $10 for a half chicken and $12 for a one-third rack of ribs, including potato salad, coleslaw, roll, dessert and beverage. Bill Olear will provide ethnic music.
