Tops Friendly Markets on Tuesday announced it will donate $2.5 million for a mother-baby unit in a new Kaleida Health children’s hospital downtown.

The mother-baby unit, which will be named for Tops Friendly Markets, is where new mothers and their newborns go directly after labor and delivery.

The gift is among the largest in a $40 million public fundraising campaign for the new hospital. Women & Children’s Hospital is moving to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and being renamed John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital.

The proposed facility will go up at Ellicott and High streets across from Buffalo General Medical Center. Officials have said that construction is expected to start later this year and be completed in 2016. So far, $34.6 million has been raised for the hospital, estimated to cost a total of $200 million.
