The WNY Flash and Portland Thorns couldn’t have played a much more even game on Sunday at Jeld-Wen Field in Portland, Ore. Therefore, a 1-1 tie between the teams was richly deserved.

The two teams spent practically the entire game deadlocked. Abby Wambach gave the Flash the lead in the 37th minute. However, Meleana Shim replied for the Thorns with a goal in the 38th minute. Those goals stood up the rest of the way. Wambach had a penalty kick in the 84th minute, but the Thorns’ Karina LeBlanc made the save.

Adrianna Franch had nine saves for WNY as Portland outshot the Flash, 20-14.

The game featured a matchup of two of the top offensive players on the American national team. Wambach and Alex Morgan, a member of the Flash two years ago, competed against each other for a change on Sunday.

Both teams are winless in their last four games. The Flash went 0-2-2 in its four-game road trip to move to 6-4-6. Portland, which stayed ahead of WNY via the tie, also is 0-2-2 in its last four.

The Flash will play at home on Sunday when they host Sky Blue FC in Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester.
