BATAVIA – A flight school based at the Genesee County Airport will not be taking off again in the near future because of a new interpretation of state sales tax rules.
Robert Miller, who operates the Bob Miller Flight School, asked the County Legislature on Wednesday to terminate his lease. He said he had lost the two airplanes he leased when the state began seeking payment of 8.5 percent sales taxes from owners of the planes.
Miller’s request was granted when he explained that the owners had to sell their planes to pay the taxes and penalties. His lease is worth $8,500 a year to the county but now will be ended in 90 days.
Jay A. Gisell, county manager, said there should be no delay in renting the hangar since there is a waiting list.
