WILSON – A 19-year-old Newfane resident was injured just before 4 a.m. today when he swerved to avoid an animal and crashed his pickup truck at the intersection of Cambria-Wilson and German Roads, Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies reported.

The truck went into a ditch, struck a culvert, went airborne and landed in the yard at 3848 Cambria-Wilson Road. The vehicle then slid across German Road and came to rest on the north shoulder of German Road.

The driver was extricated from the truck by South Wilson and Wilson Fire Companies and was flown by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center with head and arm injuries, deputies said. He told deputies he swerved to avoid an animal in the road.
