SALAMANCA – The Salamanca Common Council this week appointed John M. Hart to serve as city attorney on an interim basis, filling out the term of Wendy Peterson, who has resigned.
Peterson cited an increased workload in her private practice and her responsibilities in other municipalities when she notified Mayor Carmen Vecchiarella of her decision. Hart, of Hart and Wagner of Olean, will serve until Dec. 31, at an annual rate of $37,500.
“Everybody got along well with Wendy,” Vecchiarella said. “Her caseload just got too heavy. She will still be working some cases for us. We regret her leaving. It’s hard to lose her.”
At its Wednesday meeting, the Council voted to place the Buffalo law firm of Hodgson Russ on retainer for labor issues as needed. The per diem charges to the city, should the services be needed, would average $250 per hour, depending on the level of services needed.
In other action, the Council agreed to the issuance of a statutory installment bond for $93,051, at an interest rate of 2.75 percent, for the purchase of a 2013 CAT Backhoe and the attachments to make it useful for the Department of Public Works. The current backhoe dates to the 1980s and has already been deemed to be surplus. The funds for the equipment were part of last year’s budget, according to Vecchiarella.
City residents will no longer be able to park along the west side of Park Avenue. At the recommendation of the Police Commission, the spaces on that side of the street will be removed due to safety considerations, and signs will be placed to reflect the change. In addition, parking on the other side of the street will be prohibited from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. from Nov. 15 to April 1 to facilitate snow removal.
A provision to allow for the creation of one handicapped parking spot on the west side also was approved.
The ordinance establishing the fee for use of the pavilion at Crowley Park was unanimously amended to charge a $50 fee for any events, regardless of who is holding the event. The policy now in place would charge the same to an individual, an organization or business.
The fee amendment was the recommendation of the Recreation Committee.
The Council’s next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 14 in the Ronald Yehl Municipal Building, 225 Wildwood Ave.
