A scary accident in the third race involving four horses turned a night of entertainment into a solemn event at Buffalo Raceway on Friday night.

Raceway General Manager Jim Mango confirmed that a horse named My American Tallia broke stride, causing an accident that sent bodies of drivers flying and horses landing awkwardly on the track.

Two drivers, Ray Fisher Jr., aboard All About Boyz, and Jack Flanigen, aboard Jaded Dream, were transported by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center with apparent neck and back injuries.

Treated at the scene were Andy McCarthy, driving My American Tallia, and Jim Whittemore, on Sweetnsinful.

Mango described the condition of the track as “perfect” and said it did not factor into what happened.

“It’s a dangerous game and things happen,” Mango said. “These were very young horses. Young horses break stride,” he said of the 2-year-olds. “We’ve had accidents before; this was a bad one. We hope the drivers are OK.”

Mango said there is an ambulance on site with two paramedics. They reacted immediately and Rural/Metro Medical Service also responded, he said.
