The driver in a June high-speed crash that killed his back seat passenger has been charged with driving while intoxicated, vehicular manslaughter and unlicensed operation of a vehicle, Buffalo police announced today.

Accident investigators Martin Forero and Keith LaFalce say Wallace Hedgepeth, 20, of Buffalo, was speeding when he struck a guard rail and a tree at 3:30 a.m. on June 23 before coming to rest on some nearby grass at the ramp to the Kensington Expressway near Elm Street.

Jireh D. Williams, 21, of Buffalo, was ejected from the vehicle and died from injuries suffered in the crash. Hedgepeth and another passenger were taken to Erie County Medical Center, where they were treated for “non-life-threatening injuries,” according to police.

Hedgepeth was arraigned this morning in Buffalo City Court.
