LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) Authorities say a live basking shark that washed onto a Long Island beach died a short time later.

Long Beach Lt. Eric Cregeen tells Newsday (http://bit.ly/153Eiw4 ) that a lifeguard found the 10-foot-long creature around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday between New York and Pennsylvania avenues.

He says basking sharks are not man eaters and swimmers should not be concerned.

The shark did not appear to have any obvious signs of injuries. Cregeen says the animal may have been sick.
