The victim of Friday’s fatal motorcycle crash in the city’s Leroy neighborhood has been identified as Sonny Lee Hollingsworth, 40, of Buffalo.
Hollingsworth was apparently traveling at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred on Leroy Avenue, at the intersection with Holden Avenue, at about 7:15 p.m. Friday, according to Buffalo police accident investigators Martin Forero and Keith LaFalce.
Hollingsworth, who was riding a Kawasaki, could not avoid the Dodge Durango, which was trying to make a left turn at the intersection, police added.
Police on Saturday also said that Hollingsworth was riding side-by-side with another motorcyclist who narrowly missed the sport utility vehicle and was not injured.
Police said they are attempting to determine if the two were racing.
Hollingsworth was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he died a short time later.
An autopsy performed Saturday determined the cause of death as blunt-force injuries, said police spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge.
The male driver and passenger in the Durango were treated in ECMC and released.
Police did not release their names.
No charges have been filed. The investigation continues.
