WESTFIELD – A teenager died Saturday after rescuers pulled him from the waters of Lake Erie.
The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Jan Carlos Delosantos-Nunez, 17, of Jamestown.
Rescuers were alerted at about 12:15 p.m. Saturday to a possible drowning off the outer breakwall near Monroe Marina, according to the Sheriff’s Office and the Westfield Fire Department.
Westfield Police Officer Brent Burgess, who was first on the scene, was taken out on the lake by a boater, who told the officer that a person was struggling in the water, said Westfield Fire Chief Stephen Pacanowski.
“Officer Burgess jumped into the lake, but was unable to locate the victim, as the undertow against the breakwall was strong,” Pacanowski said Saturday in an email.
Pacanowski and other members of the Fire Department arrived on the breakwall, along with a member of the Chautauqua County Dive Team. The diver donned his wet suit and gear and jumped into the water.
The diver located the 17-year-old male in the water within five minutes, the fire chief said. The diver and Burgess pulled the victim onto the boat, which sped off to the Barcelona Pier.
The teenager was transported by ambulance to Westfield Hospital. He was later flown by Star Flight to Women & Children’s Hospital, where he died just before 6 p.m.,the Sheriff’s Office said.
